Please bring a pen and notebook

Part 2: Outdoor field study, March 21, 8 AM - 11 AM at Hinkle Creek Nature Center

This part is almost entirely outdoors along Hinkle Creek. Plan on sitting outside and for a short hike along Hinkle Creek. Please bring a pen and notebook, a camp chair, snack and water bottle, binoculars (optional). Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

Bird Language workshops involve small groups of people who sit in nature for a period of time (sit spot) and record what they see and hear with an emphasis on bird movements and sounds. The groups collectively and creatively map observations to illustrate and tell a story about what is happening on the land and how this effects them and their surroundings. When practiced over time, especially when the same people participate, relationships among people, birds, and the land develop, and this motivates conservation and deeper awareness or self and place.

These workshops are open to birders, naturalists and meditators of all experience levels who enjoy slowing down and quietly observing nature for long durations of time. The workshop is equal parts training and meditative exercise and involve 1-2 miles of easy hiking.  It offers a balance between individually-focused activities and group-participation to maximize learning and engagement. Anyone can learn bird language but these workshops are best for ages 10 and up.
